The astronomy society had a trip to the UCL Observatory on Wednesday evening. We had the opportunity to tour the many telescopes that they have on the site which is dedicated to teaching UCL students who are studying astrophysics or astronomy. We had the opportunity to meet a post-doctoral student, and a student who had just finished a degree and a master's at UCL.
We toured 5 telescopes, as seen in the picture. The first one in the picture is a telescope that is apparently the best teaching telescope in the country and the students contributed to its setup. The second one is going to be a radio telescope with a 2.5 m dish. The third one is a telescope from around the 1860s. The one below it is a similar telescope design to the one the school has but with many upgrades made to it such as having a programmable mount which allows it to start stargazing without the direct involvement of a human. We were told this increased their data collection tenfold! Finally, we also toured a telescope from 1901 which is the largest one they have, which consists of two telescopes in one with the same focal length this allows tracking of stars.
