Outreach Activity

Imperial College London Mathematics School aims to support young people from across the local area who enjoy maths and science. We do this through delivering a range of outreach activities in schools and on campus.

We have developed and launched an exciting range of outreach activities for students from KS3 to KS4. Outreach activities take place in-school, after-school and during holidays and include workshops, masterclasses, taster events (online and in person) and competitions. Please contact us if you have any suggestions, questions, or ideas about our outreach work.

Mathematical Olympiad for Girls Masterclasses

In the second half of the summer term 2025 we will launch a series of masterclasses aimed at preparing students to sit the Mathematical Competition for Girls (MCG). The MCG will be five questions, 90 mins, and similar to Maths Olympiad for Girls/Olympiad in style, adapted so the answers are 3 digits, similar to the Senior Kangaroo. We will help prepare students for this competition!

We are looking for girls in year 10, 11, or 12 who have achieved a Gold certificate in a previous UKMT challenge to apply! If your school does not offer UKMT, please contact us explaining why you would like to take part and how you have prepared so far.

Girls into Maths Summer School

In the summer term, we are excited to be hosting a free summer school for year 10 girls: Girls into Maths! This is a two-day programme, running on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 July. Day one will involve a series of fun Maths workshops, as well as workshops with mathematician Alison Kiddle. On day two, students will visit Imperial College London and the Science Museum for exciting explorations of Maths!

Girls into Maths is for year 10 girls who will achieve grade 7 or above in their GCSEs. Click here to apply using our expression of interest form! You will hear back from us about the outcome of your application in the second half of the summer term.

Maths Extra for Year 10s

In the second half of the spring term 2025, launched Maths Extra for year 10s. This will run after school in-person on Tuesdays. Maths Extra is designed for students who have a passion and talent for maths, who want to expand their knowledge beyond the GCSE curriculum. Students who take part in Maths Extra for year 10s will be able to continue the course through into the 2025-26 academic year in year 11.

As part of our aim to widen participation, preference will be given to applicants who are from groups currently underrepresented in the mathematical sciences. We are specifically looking for students who are stuyding at state school, female, and non-binary students, and students in receipt of Free School Meals or Pupil Premium funding to take part. However, all students are welcome to apply.

Axiom Maths

We have partnered with Axiom Maths (formerly MESME) to deliver Maths Circles to students in local schools. Our first cohort is currently comprised of Year 8 and 9 students, and in the Autumn term of 2024 they were joined by our second cohort, consisting of Year 7 students.

These sessions are held each Wednesday afternoon, with one in every four sessions being in-person at Imperial Maths School and the rest being online via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Students are mentored by Imperial undergraduate students and the lessons are organised into 'maths circles'; groups of 5-7 students plus one mentor. In these smaller groups, students get a chance to explore problem solving methods and discuss in detail their working.

Imperial College London Schools Outreach

mA*ths Online and Further mA*ths Online

Imperial run an online course to support Year 12 and 13 students who are considering a maths related degree at university. There is a separate course for both A Level Mathematics and A Level Further Mathematics. More information can be found for mA*ths online here and Further mA*ths online here.
